Finnish food, fun, and festivals

Guest's picture

Hei, hei Mr. Wing-

I am enjoying your journals. It was interesting to see the long, multi-consonant and vowel Finnish words. In your photos, you seem to be enjoying the warm Finnish weather with no jacket. Have you been to the sauna yet? What other Finnish food or customs have you experienced? Can you tell me how the students at the University of Oulu celebrated May Day?

Hi Deanna:

It's not that cold here.  There are still piles of old snow left over from winter, but whenever the sun peeks out from behind the cloud cover it is balmy.

I haven't been to the sauna yet.  When I go, I won't post pictures!

Although I am living at a university, I haven't seen many students here and no festivals or May Day celebrations.  I think we are between academic terms and everyone has left town.

Northern Finns eat a lot of processed foods, and drink a lot of coffee and beer.  What's really good here, though, is the bread.

I've only been here a few days, but I will certainly do more posts about Finnish culture as I learn more about it.

yours always, Mike Wing

Thank you Beth!

There's not much left to my stay, but I am visiting a Finnish school tomorrow and Friday.  I'm looking forward to that.  yours always, Mike
