Arctic

Marti Canipe is a middle school science teacher from North Carolina. Currently she is serving as an Einstein Fellow in the Office of Polar Programs at the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C. where she has worked on making polar education resources available to teachers as well as helping scientists connect with K-12 classrooms. During her twelve years at B’nai Shalom Day School, she taught third through eighth grade science, kindergarten through eighth grade technology, middle school mathematics, and eighth grade humanities. She has also served as the school’s technology coordinator for the last seven years. In the fall of 2010 Ms. Canipe will be teaching middle school science at the Wildcat Charter School in Tucson, Arizona.

Chantelle Rose has been intrigued by the out-of-doors her entire life. As a child she enjoyed camping trips with her family, canoeing expeditions, and spending every day of every summer outside. Her resulting sense of adventure has led her to travel to three continents and earn a seat on a sub-orbital spaceflight. She choose the field of education to inspire, excite, and engage students in the amazing opportunities that abound for them! She has been teaching since 1995 and has taught every grade level. She received her Master of Science in Educational Administration from the University of Dayton in 1998.

Ms. Rose currently teaches at Graham High School, where she has taught Environmental Science, Physical Science, Science in Ohio, Science Proficiency Lab, and Biology I. Her students have the opportunity to explore aviation in the footsteps of the Wright Brothers, visit Ordovician bedrock to learn about ancient Ohio, and utilize their school land lab to study the local flora and fauna.

Ms. Rose also serves as a Volunteer for Girl Scouts and organizes school and recreation Pee Wee Cheerleading. Her hobbies include traveling and spending time enjoying nature with her family.

Dr. Carin Ashjian is an associate scientist in the Department of Biology at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Her research focuses on the biology of the ocean and zooplankton ecology. She has a special interest in the ecology of zooplankton in polar regions, as these ecosystems may be significantly impacted by climate change. Since the early 1980’s, Dr. Ashjian has participated in over 35 research cruises. She received her Ph.D. in 1991 from the University of Rhode Island. Claude Larson feels a connection with the natural world and enjoys the rural setting of her home environment of northwestern New Jersey. In her sixteenth year of teaching, Claude currently teaches 8th grade Physical Science at the Jefferson Township Middle School in Oak Ridge, New Jersey. She believes that science is everywhere and seeks to inspire students to make connections with the world around them through her lessons. In her free time, Claude enjoys many outdoor pursuits, skydiving, travel, and creating mixed media art.

Dr. Ezra Zubrow is a professor of anthropology at the University of Buffalo and also holds academic positions at the University of Toronto and Cambridge University. He is also Senior Research Scientist at the National Center for Geographic Information Analysis Laboratory, which he helped found. He has a diverse set of academic interests: arctic archaeology and anthropology, climate change, human ecology and demography, as well as a deep interest in social issues (heritage, disability, and literacy). For more than 30 years he has been doing field work in Northern Canada, Finland, and the rest of Scandinavia, and he originally pursued a career in science because one of his high school teachers persuaded him to participate in an ozone-tracking project. Greg Korosec is a PhD student in anthropology at the State University of New York at Buffalo and the assistant director of the University at Buffalo's Social Systems GIS Laboratory (http://wings.buffalo.edu/research/anthrogis/). Mr. Korosec has been returning to the circumpolar north for the past several years where he is interested in the human adaptation, evolution, and responses to a changing past environment.

Dustin Keeler is a PhD student in archaeology at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Mr. Keeler's research interests include studying people of the Paleolithic and Neolithic, or the Stone Age, human settlement patterns, Northern and Western Europe, and mapping using GIS. He has participated in archeological excavations in France for several years and is currently conducting surveys and excavations on Neolithic sites in Northern Finland.

Joanne Bourgeois is a Professor in the Earth and Space Sciences Department at the University of Washington. Her main research interests include sedimentary structures and tectonics. Dr. Bourgeois also teaches and researches the history of geology, believing that exploration of how science is done leads to better science. Dr. Bourgeois has also served a two-year term as a Program Director in the Earth Sciences Division of the National Science Foundation.

Keri Rodgers teachers at and was on the planning committee of The Gateway School of Environmental Research and Technology since its inception in 2003. Using an interdisciplinary approach to learning that integrates math, science, history, art, language, and maintenance of the campus ecological garden, she has designed and implemented the Spanish and Environmental Studies curriculums used at the school.

Dr. Robert (Bob) Hollister is a biologist and ecologist at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. He is interested in the interactions between humans and natural ecosystems, and his area of expertise is vegetation change. Dr. Hollister conducts his research in research in the wetlands of Michigan, on tundra in northern Alaska, and in tropical dry forests of Puerto Rico. Karl Horeis is a native of Portland, Oregon where he grew up camping on the coast, exploring the high desert, hiking the Columbia Gorge and Cascade Mountains, and reading the books at Powell's Bookstore. Being exposed to both varied ecosystems and the landscape of good stories sparked his drive to pursue a Journalism degree at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. Subsequently, Mr. Horeis traveled to more than 20 countries and wrote for the Nevada Appeal, Associated Press, Yoga Journal, and ESPN.com before taking a job in Antarctica working for the National Science Foundation.

It was in Antarctica where he met his wife, Kitty, a teacher. Together they sailed across the Pacific Ocean before returning to Colorado where Mr. Horeis joined his wife in teaching, earning a Masters in Education from the University of Colorado. He loves teaching third and fourth graders at Foothills Academy in Wheat Ridge where he asks his students to "Create Solutions – Not Problems" on frequent outings and adventures. Mr. Horeis' hobbies include sailing, climbing, and illustrating his travel journals. His latest adventure is in parenting as he welcomed baby boy Holt into his family in March, 2010.

Dr. Jeff Rasic specializes in the archaeology of northern hunter-gatherers and is particularly interested in the earliest inhabitants of the north and how they made a living at the end of the last ice age. He is currently the acting curator of Archaeology at the University of Alaska Museum of the North and andalso works as an archaeologist for the National Park Service. He has worked in the Caribbean, mid-Atlantic states, and western U.S. over the past 17 year, and since 1995 has focused on field work and research projects in Alaska, especially the northern and interior portions of the state.

Bill Hedman is an archaeologist for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Alaska.

Cheryl Forster teaches Earth Systems and Chemistry at West High School, an inner-city school in Salt Lake City, Utah. She knew she wanted to teach high school students while working as a material engineer. She had the opportunity to help a local 4th grade class with their science fair projects and was inspired by the kid's excitement and energy for science. During her 20 years as an engineer in industry, she realized the need for more scientists and engineers and started teaching adults, then college students, and finally high school students. She teaches her students about the real world applications of science and how rewarding it is to work as an engineer, solving real-world problems through teamwork and innovation. Ms. Forster hopes to influence technically minded students to consider a career in science or engineering.

Ms. Forster received her undergraduate degrees from the University of Oregon in Chemistry and Geology. Her PhD is in Materials from Penn State University. Besides teaching, Ms. Forster spends her time with her husband and two teenage sons—skiing, playing tennis, hiking, and mountain biking.

Dr. Steve Roof is an associate professor of earth and environmental science at Hampshire College. Professor Roof's teaching and research focus on environmental issues such as climate change, pollution, and land conservation. He and his students travel frequently to Death Valley and the Southwest for climate change field research. Professor Roof also coordinates a climate change research program in the High Arctic for undergraduate students called the "Svalbard REU." Dr. Al Werner is a professor of geology at Mt. Holyoke College. His areas of research are in geology and climate change. As a kid he was told "not to play in the mud," but now he makes a living doing just that. In his feild work across the Arctic, Dr. Werner and his students bring sediments back to the laboratory to learn more about past environmental change.
